The accident happened around 3:30 pm on 5th Street near Orange Street. An unidentified pedestrian was reportedly struck by a freight train for an unknown reason.
The pedestrian was tragically declared dead as a result of the accident. Initial reports indicate the crossing was equipped with crossing arms and warning lights, but it is unclear whether the area has pedestrian gates to prevent people from accidentally stepping onto the tracks. Many crossings are equipped with gates to keep vehicles from accidentally entering the intersection when a train is coming, but only a few have pedestrian gate arms, designed to come down over sidewalks and walkways to prevent pedestrians from mistakenly stepping onto train tracks when a train is inbound. The absence of these pedestrian gates are sometimes responsible for tragic accidents.
