CHINO: Charter Bus Involved in Fiery Accident on 71 Freeway near Grand Avenue

“Investigation Ongoing”

CHINO, CALIFORNIA (February 5, 2017) – A charter bus was involved in a deadly collision on the 71 Freeway on Sunday evening, according to a local news source. (map)

The accident happened around 1:26 am on the 71 Freeway near the Grand Avenue off-ramp. A charter bus carrying the San Diego Christian College basketball team was heading back home from Bakersfield, when they were struck from the rear by a man in a Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta immediately burst into flames after the accident.

A passerby was able to pull the driver of the Jetta out of their vehicle before it was fully engulfed in flames, however the driver was tragically declared dead at the scene by responding paramedics. The 18 members of the basketball team inside the charter bus were not harmed, however the bus also caught on fire as a result of the accident, which remains under investigation.
