EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA (December 17, 2017) – Three people were injured on Sunday when a plane crashed into a parking lot near Gillespie Field, according to a local news source. (map)
The plane had just left the Gillespie Airport en route to John Wayne Airport at around 10:00 am when the pilot reported engine trouble. The pilot attempted to return to the airport, and instead struck a light pole on approach, then hit a fence in a parking lot between two buildings. The impact caused the plane to immediately burst into flames, and it was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.
The three people inside the plane were able to escape the mangled aircraft before it became engulfed in flames, but all three suffered injuries. They were rushed to a trauma hospital for treatment.
The plane was reportedly a 1947 North American Navion, and it is registered to a David Alan Roberts who lives in Huntington Beach. Whether David Roberts was on the plane is unknown. Two of the people on board the plane have been confirmed to be Huntington Beach police officers.
The cause of the accident remains under open investigation at this time to determine cause and liability. This is the second fatal crash of a Navion this year, in February two people were killed after a Navion plane crashed at the Francis Gabreski Airport in New York.
