BARTOW, FLORIDA (December 24, 2017) – 27 year old Peter Worthington, a 3rd year law student, was tragically identified as one of those killed in Sunday’s plane crash in Florida, according to a local news source. (map)
The plane, carrying five people, taxied out from its hangar around 6:30 am. It then took off from the Bartow Muni Airport around 7:15 am, en route to Key West with its passengers. The plane crashed for an unknown reason just moments after takeoff, bursting into flames and killing all five on board.
One of those on board was identified as 27 year old Peter Worthington. Peter was a 3rd year law student at University of Maryland in Baltimore, and was on board the plane with his wife, Victoria Shannon Worthington. The plane’s pilot was identified as John Shannon, the father of Victoria and Victoria’s sister Olivia, who was also killed in the crash. Krista Clayton, a family friend, was on board as well.
The plane crash is currently under investigation by the NTSB, but initial reports indicate the visibility at the time of the crash was almost 0 due to extremely heavy fog. The airport does have a control tower, but it is unknown if anyone was in the tower at the time of the crash, or whether the plane needed clearance to take off. The accident will be under investigation for some time, but initial investigation reveals that this particular model of Cessna has been responsible for a number of fatal accidents, starting with the prototype Cessna 340 crashing and killing its pilot back in 1970.
