RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (November 16, 2017) – 11 members of an Orange County girl’s basketball team were injured on Thursday after their van was involved in an accident on the 91 Freeway, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 1:20 pm on the eastbound side of the 91 Freeway near Adams Street. A 2003 Ford passenger van carrying members of the Newport Christian School girl’s basketball team was traveling eastbound when it approached stopped traffic. The driver of the van, identified as Terrell Thorogood, was unable to stop in time and rear ended a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The impact pushed the Jeep into a 2013 Chevrolet Blazer, which struck a Toyota Sequoia, which in turn struck a 2013 Dodge Avenger.
All 11 of the girls on board the van were hospitalized, with injuries ranging from minor to major, with some sustaining injuries as serious as broken bones. The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer, identified as 22 year old Judith Leon, was also hospitalized. Initial reports indicate the van suffered heavy damage to the front passenger’s side, crushing the engine compartment. The condition of all the girls is unknown at this time, but the investigation remains open to determine cause and liability.
