The accident happened around 4:30 pm. A Beech B36 Bonanza carrying four people took off from Montgomery Field. A short time later, the pilot reported experiencing engine troubles and attempted to return to the airport. Instead, he crash landed into a baseball field, skidding across into a house in the 6000 block of Chandler Drive near Mt. Abernathy Avenue and bursting into flames.
Robert Stelling was identified as one of the two people that were pronounced dead as a result of the accident. Robert’s wife Dawn was able to escape the downed aircraft, but sustained serious injuries. One other person was reportedly killed, and one more was injured. The accident remains under active investigation at this time to determine cause and liability.
The Stellings were from Southhampton, New York, and Robert leaves behind three children as well as his wife Dawn who was injured in the crash. Robert owned a beach and tennis club and Dawn owns a veterinary hospital. They were in San Diego attending a veterinary conference and visiting friends.
