UTAH: Four People Killed in Plane Crash

SAN JUAN COUNTY, UTAH (February 23, 2017) – Four people were tragically killed in a plane crash in San Juan County, early Thursday afternoon. (map)

The four people who were killed in the plane crash were heavily involved in their local grain farming community in Canada. Pilot Bill Kaupp, 64, was flying with his son Clint Kaupp, 28, and family friends, Tim Mueller, 28, and Ron McKenzie, 66. The group of four was traveling to Albuquerque to examine a plane that Bill Kaupp was interested in purchasing. Pilot Jon Kaupp was reported as semi-retired, but an avid hobby flyer over the past 10 years.

Initial reports indicate that the plane departed from the Grand Junction Regional Airport and was headed for Albuquerque. The plane mysteriously disappeared from radar Thursday morning. Civil Air Patrol’s New Mexico Wing sent a crew to guide the Utah and Colorado searchers to the scene of the crash after receiving the Piper Lance’s emergency signal. The wreck was discovered the following day on Friday evening. The Piper Lance crashed in an area with rugged terrain and canyons, approximately halfway between Monticello and Dove Creek, Colorado.

The reason behind the plane crash is currently unknown. It is unclear whether the pilot of the Piper Lance sent an emergency distress signal prior to their crash, since the plane failed to appear on radar shortly after departing. The NTSB and the FAA are both on scene to investigate the accident at this time and the HWG Law Firm will continue to receive updates.
