Oklahoma: Walter Mullaney and Cesar Gomez Dies in Plane Crash

CADDO COUNTY, OKLAHOMA (March 25, 2018) – Walter Mullaney and Cesar Gomez were tragically killed in a plane that crashed in a Caddo County cotton field late Sunday night. (map)

The single-engined aircraft, a Model 35 Beechcraft Bonanza, took off at 11 p.m. from Odessa, Texas. The plane was bound for Clarence E. Page Airport in El Reno when it suddenly went off radar. The pilot was identified as 62-years-old Walter Mullaney. Cesar Gomez, 27-years-old from Lumton, Colorado, was identified as the other passenger and victim that was tragically killed in the deadly crash. Initial reports indicate that Mullaney had requested to land at the Hinton Airport due to inclement weather. However, the place diverted in the east direction and crashed in a field near the intersection State Highway 58 and East 1080 Road.

Mullaney was the airport manager at the El Reno Municipal Airport from September 1986 to March 2011. He continued as a commercial pilot until October 2014.
Gomez had quite the reputation himself. Since 2014, he had ridden 1,401 Quarter Horses and earned an excess of $5.4 million. Just this past Saturday, Gomex rode Onewickedchick and won third-place in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

The cause of the accident remains under open investigation at this time to determine cause and liability. Beechcraft Bonanza has been involved in an alarming number of 8 accidents in the past several decades, totaling in a number of 13 deaths. These statistics may come across as quite surprising since Beechcraft Bonanzas are produced by Beehcraft and has been in continuous production longer than any other plane in history.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
